Liverpool’s formidable centre-back Ibrahima Konaté is reportedly seeking an enhanced contract amid mounting interest from Paris Saint-Germain. As the Reds march toward a potential 20th Premier League title under the stewardship of Arne Slot, Konaté’s future has become a topic of much speculation.
Having rejuvenated Liverpool’s fortunes, Slot has managed to steer focus away from the ongoing contract negotiations concerning key players. Among those nearing the end of their current deals are stars like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk. However, it seems their futures may soon be decided.
Alexander-Arnold is rumoured to have set his sights on a move to Real Madrid for the next season, while progress looks promising for Salah and Van Dijk’s contract renewals. Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano recently disclosed that Liverpool are on the brink of finalising new terms with Salah, and similarly optimistic discussions have been held regarding Van Dijk.
This news will be a massive relief for Liverpool supporters, given Salah and Van Dijk’s critical contributions this season, with Van Dijk partnering effectively with Konaté at the defence’s core. Despite Konaté’s struggle with knee problems this year, limiting him to six absences, his rapport with Van Dijk has been pivotal.
Broadening the club’s coverage, attention is firmly on Konaté as his existing contract, which terminates in 2026, may warrant re-evaluation. Currently earning approximately £80,000 per week, the French international is rumoured to be targeting a salary adjustment to around £200,000 weekly.
The Times has illuminated the ongoing negotiations since last October, suggesting that Liverpool have their work cut out if they are to fend off PSG’s interest and tie Konaté to a long-term deal.
Meanwhile, striker Darwin Núñez faces an uncertain future at Anfield. Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant insists the Uruguayan has had ample opportunity to shine and might benefit from a fresh start elsewhere.
Pennant told Golden Panda, “I can’t see Darwin Núñez being at Liverpool come next season. He’s had his chance and not done enough. Sometimes a change benefits all parties, especially when you’ve lacked the clinical edge Liverpool needs.”
As the closing stages of the season approach, Liverpool’s contractual tussles will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping their squad dynamics for the years ahead.
Liverpool fans give us your thoughts, do you think Ibrahima Konaté is likely to leave Anfield this summer?
