Manchester United icon Roy Keane has sharply criticised any notion that winning the Europa League would constitute a successful season for Ruben Amorim’s beleaguered side.
The current campaign has been one to forget for the Red Devils, who have languished in the lower echelons of the Premier League table for much of 2024/25. With disappointing exits from both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, Amorim has found it challenging to impose his preferred 3-4-3 system following the departure of former manager Erik ten Hag.
Despite recent signs of incremental progress, United now turn their attention to a pivotal Europa League quarter-final against the French contenders Lyon, with the first leg due this Thursday. A triumph in this competition would secure a coveted spot in next season’s Champions League. However, Keane remains sceptical that such an achievement would salvage their woeful season.
Speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, Keane asserted, “The Europa League is not the trophy that defines success for Manchester United. Maybe for other clubs, but not for United. It’s a path to the Champions League, but lifting that trophy alone isn’t enough for us.”
Conversely, Gary Neville provided a more optimistic perspective, suggesting that a trophy would still mark a successful season considering the early obstacles. “The reality is, United were never going to win the league this year—we knew that from the outset. So their chances lie in the FA Cup, League Cup, and Europa League. Winning one of those should be seen as a success, despite the turmoil of sacking a manager and a disappointing 13th-place in the league.”
On a more positive note, United have received a significant boost ahead of their clash with Lyon as promising midfielder Kobbie Mainoo returns to training. However, Manager Amorim believes there is still room for growth in the young talent.
“When I see Kobbie, his talent is undeniable,” Amorim remarked. “That said, there are still areas he must develop—his game pace and contribution to build-up play need work. Around the box, he shows his potential, but at 19, he’s not the finished article yet. It’s my duty not to rush him.”
Manchester United fans will undoubtedly hope that the Europa League path could restore some glory to an otherwise difficult season.
