Jack Grealish, the flamboyant winger for Manchester City, might be on the cusp of departure this summer, but a reunion with Aston Villa seems improbable, according to credible football insider David Ornstein.
As Grealish enters his fourth campaign at the Etihad, his £100 million signing has been underwhelming for some, with the England international amassing 155 appearances yet delivering just 17 goals and 23 assists. These figures have fuelled criticism of the sizable investment made by City.
The 29-year-old has found himself edged out of Pep Guardiola’s primary plans this season, starting merely seven league encounters and making the first XI in just one of City’s last 15 fixtures. Such a scenario casts doubt on his future in Manchester, with a transfer appearing increasingly inevitable.
Rumour has it that Tottenham Hotspur are keenly interested in acquiring Grealish’s services at season’s end. However, while City are unlikely to recoup the full amount of their original financial outlay, precise details about their asking price or openness to a sale remain scant.
Speaking during a Q&A for The Athletic, Ornstein, a respected voice in football circles, commented on potential suitors for Grealish. Although he couldn’t confirm any concrete interest from clubs like Newcastle, Spurs, or Everton, he flagged them as possible contenders for the winger’s signature.
Ornstein speculated, “I could envisage a move, possibly a loan, but there’s uncertainty as to who might emerge as a bidder, and his salary could pose a hurdle. Newcastle might be a fascinating option to rejuvenate his form, given their need for bolstering wide attack options. Spurs could also fit the bill, though a move to London raises questions. Everton could benefit from his prowess; they are in transition with a new stadium and proximity to his current home might be appealing. However, a return to Aston Villa seems off the cards.”
Despite a challenging season, Grealish’s impact was undeniable during City’s historic 2022/23 Treble win, contributing significantly across 13 Champions League outings. This term, his contributions have waned, with three goals and five assists across all competitions.
The coming months are poised to be decisive for Grealish’s career trajectory, where a move could see him reignite the spark that made him a darling at Villa Park, albeit not with a move back there. Manchester City fans and followers alike will be keenly awaiting developments as the transfer window looms.
