Arsenal’s prospects of securing the services of prolific Swede Viktor Gyokeres have received a significant boost, following news that Manchester United have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to make Matheus Cunha their first summer acquisition. Both Premier League giants have been closely linked with Gyokeres, with the Gunners on the hunt for a talismanic striker and United eager to bolster their attacking options.
Gyokeres has once again set the footballing world alight, leaving Sporting CP faithful enthralled with a staggering 43 goals in his debut season, and exceeding that formidable tally during the 2024/25 campaign. His latest heroics helped propel Sporting to a 3-1 victory over Benfica in the Taca de Portugal final, extending the contest into extra-time with a well-placed penalty.
Amidst the celebrations following Sporting’s consecutive triumph in the Portuguese league, speculation about Gyokeres’s future persists. When queried about possible interest from Arsenal, the Swede remained coy, remarking, “I don’t know anything, I tried to focus on the last few games, if something is true, we’ll see.”
Despite Gyokeres’s reserved comments, it’s understood that the striker’s entourage harbours a preference for him to stay put in Lisbon. Nonetheless, the rumour mill in Portugal is awash with tales of a pre-existing arrangement permitting Gyokeres to depart should a suitor meet the £60 million price tag.
Meanwhile, Manchester United, despite their underwhelming 15th-place finish in the Premier League and missing out on Champions League qualifications, displayed their financial prowess by reportedly agreeing to a deal for Wolves’ Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha. The deal, said to be worth £62.5 million, will be fulfilled in three instalments over the next two years, seemingly ending United’s interest in Gyokeres.
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the signing of Cunha as United’s attacking headliner means any deal for Viktor Gyokeres is ostensibly off the cards, leaving Arsenal with a clear path to pursue the Swedish striker. However, the North London club may also weigh up a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with head coach Mikel Arteta reportedly keen on the Slovenian forward’s potential.
