In the latest transfer rumblings, Chelsea are reportedly leading the charge for Borussia Dortmund’s sought-after winger Jamie Gittens, a former Manchester City academy prodigy, as well as targeting a prolific striker in Serhou Guirassy. The West London outfit are optimistic of landing both players in a £105m swoop this summer, aiming to outpace Liverpool and Arsenal in the race for their signatures.
Under manager Enzo Maresca, Chelsea experienced a robust start to their campaign, initially positioning themselves as potential title contenders. However, their form has plummeted, and the Blues are now embroiled in a fierce struggle for Champions League qualification. Maresca, who has faced increasing scrutiny for his less-than-exhilarating tactical approach, recently gained attention for criticising Chelsea’s supporters after their team conceded a late equaliser against Ipswich.
Despite these challenges, the club’s hierarchy has reiterated their faith in Maresca, indicating no imminent changes at the managerial helm. Instead, attention is turning to the transfer market, with Chelsea seeking to bolster their ranks further following a staggering £1.2bn spending spree over the past three years.
Jamie Gittens, who briefly graced Chelsea’s youth ranks before his development journey saw him migrate to Manchester City and subsequently flourish at Dortmund, is now a prime target. Dortmund have reportedly slashed Gittens’ asking price to €50m (£44m), a reduction from €100m, due to his misalignment with coach Niko Kovac’s tactical system. Gittens, having netted 12 goals and provided five assists in 44 appearances this season, is reportedly eager to return to the Premier League.
Gittens’ potential acquisition might coincide with uncertainty surrounding current winger Mykhaylo Mudryk, following his suspension for a doping violation. Jadon Sancho, on loan from Manchester United, could also be a bargaining chip in negotiations with Dortmund, who are interested in reclaiming the England international permanently.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are also said to be preparing an offer in the region of €70m (£61m) for Dortmund’s Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy. The 29-year-old has made headlines by scoring 28 goals this season, including a notable hat-trick against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals. Despite the precedent of signing younger talents, Chelsea’s desire for a proven goal-scorer is evident, with Guirassy viewed as the solution to their striking woes.
Should these deals materialise, Chelsea hopes to restore its dominance on both domestic and European fronts, reasserting their status among the continent’s elite. Stamford Bridge appears geared for a busy summer, with Blues fans eagerly awaiting the signature announcements.
