Chelsea’s promising midfielder, Andrey Santos, has quashed rumours of a big-money move to Arsenal, reaffirming his dedication to breaking into the first team at Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old Brazilian, who has impressed during his loan at sister club Strasbourg in France, was reportedly on the radar of both Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain following 11 goals and five assists in 34 appearances last season.
Initially signed by Chelsea for £13 million from Vasco da Gama in January 2023, Santos has yet to feature for the Blues’ first team. Difficulty in securing a work permit initially led to loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg, where his performance levels and leadership qualities, including captaining the French side, showcased his potential value.
Despite speculations of a £50 million transfer to Arsenal, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly, speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum with Bloomberg, expressed excitement about Santos’s potential contribution at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. Boehly reiterated intent for the youngster to be part of Chelsea’s ambitions of securing more silverware.
Santos, speaking to The Daily Mail, articulated his long-held dream to perform in the Chelsea blue, expressing gratitude towards the fans for their unwavering support over his career trajectory. “My love and desire to play for Chelsea are known. The affection from Chelsea fans has been very special,” he said. “I’m eager to show what I can do at the Club World Cup.”
Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca, while optimistic about integrating Santos into a midfield already bolstered by Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Enzo Fernandez, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, urged caution. “Andrey is performing well but our main focus is finishing the current season strongly. Planning for the next campaign will follow,” Maresca stated earlier this season.
Santos is set to be included in Chelsea’s squad for the upcoming Club World Cup, marking a significant opportunity for him to leave a strong impression.
