Liverpool have reportedly opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, in what could become a sensational hijack of Manchester City’s long-standing interest in the German wonderkid.
The 21-year-old, fresh off a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title campaign under Xabi Alonso, has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe. And while City were thought to be in pole position to land the attacking midfielder, Liverpool have now entered the race — and in serious fashion.
Sources close to the situation suggest that representatives from Liverpool have held initial discussions with Wirtz’s camp as the Merseyside club begin planning for life under incoming boss Arne Slot. With City plotting a long-term midfield reshuffle and Liverpool still searching for the next jewel in their creative crown, both Premier League heavyweights are making early moves.
Wirtz a Priority Target for Both Clubs
Regarded as the finest young German talent since Kai Havertz, Wirtz played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic season — contributing 18 goals and 19 assists across all competitions. Comfortable as a No.10 or from the left, his vision, balance, and ability to glide past defenders have drawn comparisons to a young David Silva.
Manchester City have been tracking Wirtz for over 18 months and view him as a long-term successor to Kevin De Bruyne. Pep Guardiola is believed to be a huge admirer and even held informal conversations with the player during a visit to Manchester earlier this year.
However, Liverpool’s sudden intervention has added fresh intrigue to the saga. Slot, known for his attacking philosophy and work with creative midfielders at Feyenoord, has reportedly identified Wirtz as a dream addition for the new era at Anfield.
Player Yet to Decide — But Madrid Loom
Despite interest from England, Wirtz’s future remains undecided. Bayer Leverkusen are desperate to keep hold of their star man for at least another season and are under no financial pressure to sell, especially with Euro 2024 taking place on home soil this summer.
But a summer move remains a possibility — particularly if the player signals a desire to take the next step. While both Liverpool and City are seen as appealing destinations, Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation and are expected to make a move in 2025 should Wirtz remain in Germany this summer.
That leaves the Premier League clubs with a narrow window to act, and Liverpool appear determined not to let City coast to another marquee signing uncontested.
Statement Signing in the Making?
For Liverpool, landing Wirtz would be a statement of real intent in the post-Klopp era — a signal that the club remains attractive to Europe’s top talents. For City, missing out on the German could be a rare setback in their typically slick transfer strategy.
One thing is certain: with both clubs circling and Wirtz’s star rising, this transfer battle is just getting started.
