In spite of Mohamed Salah’s recent contract renewal with Liverpool, ties to Saudi Arabia’s footballing ambitions persist. The Egyptian forward, now 32, has solidified his status as a legend at Anfield, amassing a staggering 243 goals over 396 appearances since his £36.5 million move from Roma in 2017. Salah remains pivotal to Arne Slot’s Liverpool side as they edge closer to securing the Premier League title.
Speculation about Salah’s future had been rife throughout the season, especially with his previous contract nearing its end. However, Liverpool recently announced the signing of a new contract that extends his commitment to the club until 2027, providing a handsome £380,000-a-week salary. This move seemingly put to rest the swirling rumours surrounding his next steps.
Nonetheless, the Saudi Pro League, which made headlines with an audacious £150 million bid for Salah by Al-Ittihad in 2023, has not ruled out the possibility of securing his talents in the future. Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Sports, acknowledged the ongoing interest while speaking to the press ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. “He’s a superstar, an iconic Arab Muslim who fits the Saudi league’s identity,” remarked Al-Faisal. “While there was no ongoing discussion, the door remains open for future engagements.”
Despite the hype around potential Saudi transfers, Salah has demonstrated his brilliance on the pitch, tallying 27 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League this season alone. This performance has propelled Liverpool within a whisker of the title, following their recent 1-0 win against Leicester. Expressing joy at his extended stay with Liverpool, Salah shared, “We have a fantastic team, and I’m excited to be part of this journey. I’ve had my best years here and look forward to many more, winning trophies and enjoying my football.”
To the Liverpool faithful, Salah had this to say: “I’m thrilled to remain at this club. With your steadfast support, let’s continue our pursuit of glory and major trophies together.”
As the Premier League season draws to a close, the future will reveal whether the lure of Saudi ambition will prove irresistible to Liverpool’s Egyptian King.
