Kobbie Mainoo, the rising star of Manchester United, is reportedly a prime candidate for a summer departure as the Red Devils chart out plans for a significant squad rebuild. The talented midfielder, hailed as one of the brightest young prospects in Europe following his breakout season in 2023/24, now finds his future at Old Trafford in considerable doubt.
Mainoo, aged 19, who dazzled for both Manchester United and the England national team last season, has faced a more challenging 2024/25 campaign. Plagued by injuries, he has managed only 15 Premier League starts, and questions linger over his suitability in head coach Ruben Amorim’s tactical set-up. Since his predecessor Erik ten Hag’s departure, Mainoo has struggled to find a consistent role within various positions on the pitch.
Despite Mainoo’s undeniable potential and value, reports continue to surface linking him with a move away from Manchester United, a prospect that could generate valuable funds for the club’s summer overhaul. The Red Devils are under pressure to offload certain players to comply with profit and sustainability regulations, and a sale of an academy graduate like Mainoo would constitute pure profit.
Although the club would ideally like to retain Mainoo, the Manchester Evening News has reported that contract negotiations, ongoing since March 2024, have yet to yield a resolution. The uncertainty over his future remains with the possibility that United and Mainoo may ultimately part ways.
There are suggestions that, should a compromise not be reached, a summer departure might be mutually beneficial. The club reportedly aims to secure a fee in the vicinity of £70 million for the young midfielder, an amount that would significantly contribute to their restructuring ambitions.
Mainoo’s deployment has varied this season, having oscillated between deeper and more advanced midfield roles. Amorim previously justified this tactical shift, emphasising Mainoo’s ability close to the opponent’s box: “Kobbie’s position today, we had time to understand the players. He was struggling a lot defending, but as a no.10, you can feel he’s playing on the ball nearer the box, and near the box, he is really good with his small connections.”
The situation remains fluid, with supporters and club officials alike hoping for an amicable resolution, though the reality of a summer exit looms large, contingent on how Mainoo’s abilities align with Amorim’s vision for the squad moving forward.
