Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, is setting his sights on a potential double acquisition from Serie A, having dispatched scouts for a closer inspection of two standout talents at Atalanta. Reports emanating from Italy reveal that United’s recruitment team was present in force last weekend, scrutinising the performances of Atalanta’s internationals as they took on AC Milan.
According to the Italian outlet TuttoAtalanta, the Red Devils are diligently laying the groundwork for a vigorous summer transfer campaign under the stewardship of Amorim, who is reportedly seeking to bolster his squad with five fresh faces. Among the priorities are reinforcements in midfield and a prolific striker to complement the burgeoning Rasmus Hojlund.
The Atalanta duo showcased their prowess in contrasting styles during the showdown against Milan. Brazilian international Ederson was the hero of the hour, netting the winning goal from a deep-lying midfield position in a 1-0 triumph. Ederson’s impressive display was not limited to scoring; he completed the most dribbles, created the highest number of chances, and topped the tackling stats with seven in the 90 minutes.
This dynamic midfielder is attracting attention from clubs across Europe and is seen as an ideal partner to the more defensively inclined Manuel Ugarte.
Meanwhile, Italian international Mateo Retegui also left his mark against the Rossoneri. The forward was a persistent threat, attempting four shots on goal worth 1.18 xG but couldn’t add to his impressive tally of 26 goals this season.
Retegui, 25, has been a revelation in Serie A since arriving two seasons ago after catching the eye by scoring against England in a European Championship qualifier. Following a successful spell with Genoa, he joined Atalanta last summer and has since been instrumental in their push to third place in the Serie A table, along the way finding success in the Champions League.
United’s interest in Retegui might be tempered by ongoing reports of their pursuit of Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen, although the Atalanta forward remains a strong candidate for Amorim’s squad.
Both Ederson and Retegui are firmly on United’s radar, with initial approaches reportedly made. While a double swoop could see the combined cost exceed £100m, United’s decisive approach indicates their serious interest, and both players are considered vital pieces for reinforcing their midfield and attack.
Atalanta, known for their savvy player sales, will undoubtedly place a premium on these sought-after talents—particularly with Retegui’s impressive goal return across competitions.
Whether United moves forward with securing one or both players remains uncertain, but it is evident that Amorim’s pursuit of rekindling Manchester United’s glory involves casting a keen eye towards Italy’s promising pool of talent.
