Liverpool’s summer rebuild under Arne Slot is picking up pace, with reports confirming interest in a £51m-rated star as Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong edges closer to completing his move to Anfield.
Following a sensational first season under new head coach Slot — capped by a long-awaited Premier League title triumph in April — the Reds are wasting no time preparing for their title defence and European campaign. With Frimpong expected to be confirmed as the club’s second summer signing in the coming days, attention is now turning to further strengthening the squad.
According to multiple reports in Germany and the UK, Liverpool have now formally registered interest in a £51 million-rated midfielder — believed to be Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners — with the Dutch international reportedly giving positive signals about a potential move. Koopmeiners, who played a key role in Atalanta’s Europa League campaign this season, is said to be keen on the project at Anfield and open to a Premier League switch.
Frimpong’s imminent arrival from Leverkusen is seen as a major coup. The 23-year-old Dutchman enjoyed a brilliant season under Xabi Alonso, winning the Bundesliga title and emerging as one of Europe’s most effective attacking wing-backs. His pace, energy, and attacking output will offer Liverpool an alternative to Trent Alexander-Arnold — or possibly even facilitate a tactical reshuffle that sees Alexander-Arnold shift into midfield on a more permanent basis.
Frimpong’s move is expected to be finalised in the next 48 hours, with personal terms agreed and a medical scheduled. The deal is believed to be worth around £34 million, meeting the release clause in his Leverkusen contract.
With the Frimpong deal all but done, Liverpool’s focus has now shifted to securing a marquee midfield addition. Slot has made clear his intention to add physicality and tactical flexibility to the middle of the park — areas that Koopmeiners is well-equipped to address. The Dutchman’s ability to play as both a holding midfielder and a more advanced playmaker fits neatly into Slot’s 4-2-3-1 system.
Sources close to the player suggest that Koopmeiners has been encouraged by Liverpool’s rapid transfer business and the clear direction under Slot, who is said to have already spoken with several prospective targets. There is also a belief that Frimpong’s move — with whom Koopmeiners shares a strong rapport from their Eredivisie days — could help persuade the Atalanta star to follow suit.
Liverpool are also mindful of competition from Juventus and Napoli, but the Premier League champions are confident that their project and financial clout put them in pole position.
With pre-season just around the corner and the Club World Cup also on the horizon, Liverpool are determined to have the majority of their business wrapped up early. The message from the red half of Merseyside is clear: there will be no resting on laurels at Anfield this summer.
