Real Sociedad’s illustrious midfielder Martin Zubimendi has poured cold water on swirling rumours about a potential move to Arsenal, amidst rife conjecture over his future. The 26-year-old, a reported summer target for Mikel Arteta’s side, had been touted as the Gunners’ first acquisition of the transfer window. Yet, the Spanish maestro has swiftly moved to dispel such speculation.
In an interview with Radiogaceta de los Deportes, further disseminated by Noticias de Gipuzkoa, Zubimendi addressed his summer plans, indicating, “There are naturally possibilities, but it does appear as though this summer could be protracted and unpredictable. At this current juncture, that’s not my immediate concern, as I’m presently absorbed with national team duties, which are demanding enough in themselves.”
When probed about an alleged medical with Arsenal, Zubimendi responded, “This is precisely the kind of narrative that pervades the world of football. Often, I’m met with reports of activities I’m entirely unaware of upon waking. This was a prime example. While I don’t tend to lend much credence to such tales, I did share those photographs to clarify that they didn’t mirror the actual state of affairs.”
The talented midfielder’s prowess has also caught the attention of Real Madrid, where incoming manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly keen on his services. Yet, Zubimendi remained reticent on the matter of any discussions with Los Blancos. Reflecting on his connection with Alonso, he remarked, “I have always considered him my idol and was fortunate to have him as a coach during a pivotal year in the reserve team. However, I shy away from entertaining hypotheticals, as I find focusing on the present more respectful, particularly from within the national team environment as we prepare for a significant competition.”
